If you don't speak español, that means happy birthday to me.
So what did I do on this my 20th (seriously?! I'm so old!) birthday?
Well the morning was the same as any other day. Except a little sadder because the fruit I got for breakfast was a pear, and honestly, they're not my favorite. Oh well.
Class was boring and I don't like having 10 people in our classes in the morning. I preferred when it was just the 6 of us. Especially because all of the new people are pretty talkative and have a lot to say about everything. Which can be nice so you don't have to talk as much but it's also kind of unfortunate because sometimes it's just that you really can't talk much once they get going. Not that I really would have had much to say today. We're going over the subjunctive and we've started talking about using it with expressing opinions. So we were supposed to give our opinions on all this stuff about the city and/or the country we live in or what we think about sevilla. And I just don't have opinions about a lot of this stuff. Plus a lot of the phrases we were using were stuff like, it's horrible that, it's unjust that, it's not logical that, and I just don't want to spend the class period complaining about political type stuff in america. America sounds pretty great to me right now. So does the city I live in there. I don't have any complaints about it. And sevilla? I'm trying to make the most of it, so why would I want to go around and list all of the bad things about it? So yeah. That was basically the first two classes and by then I was so ready to be done with class.
But no. We had the afternoon class still. Today we talked about stories and legends and such which is a theme I usually like but I still just felt like the day was dragging on and on and on. We watched this weird video that told a story about this lonely scarecrow that just wanted to be friends with the birds and didn't understand why they never came to talk to him. Then he help nurse a sick blind bird back to health and asked it why the birds wouldn't be friends with him and the bird told him that scarecrows scare birds. So the scarecrow went to the farmer and was going to ask to not do the whole scarecrow thing anymore but the farmer got kinda freaked out that the scarecrow was alive and thought he was going to attack him so he gathered all the villagers and they hunted down the scarecrow and burnt down the windmill he was hiding in. The birds wanted to help the scarecrow since he had helped one of them but there was nothing they could do so the scarecrow died. But then the birds gathered up the ashes and spread them all over so that the ashes were flying in the wind and the scarecrow was finally surrounded by friends, flying through the air with the birds. It was supposed to be a legend about why crows are black or something but that wasn't really a big part of the story I didn't think. So it was interesting enough. And now we have to write our own story but she gave us certain things we have to have in it which is a cloud, a girl playing the flute, a girl on a bike, a monkey, and a train station. Ok. And then she said she wasn't going to be there tomorrow afternoon but instead of just having the afternoon off we're supposed to go join some other class. Not too happy about that. But whatever.
After class Emily and I got some really good ice cream. Then we sat in some plaza for awhile where I was kind of afraid we were going to be attacked by pigeons. After that we walked around and went in some shops. I didn't really buy anything but then we had to go to the grocery store to pick up some more bread for sandwiches and water so I decided to pick up some oreos as a treat.
When I got back to the house it was almost dinner time. For dinner we had this kind of weird ugly colored soup that wasn't too bad. We also had some kind of meat or maybe fish we honestly didn't know but it tasted ok. There was also the potato cake thing that I really like. Then for dessert R made this little cake and put a two and a zero candle on it for me. It was really nice. But after I blew out the candles J decided he should take pictures so I had to blow out the candles again. Then he just took a lot of pictures of us and R tried to get a picture of him but was just failing at using the camera. It was really funny.
So overall not a bad birthday. And I mean it will be hard to forget the year I spent my birthday in spain.

monday. again.
Just another monday. Not much exciting going on. Same old morning routine. I wish everyday could be like yesterday, but I guess then I wouldn't ever get much done. I just really would love to sleep a little more in the morning.
We had four new people in our morning classes today. That brings the total up to 10 which is a lot. Three are from the U.S. and they are all here with the same program. The other one is from switzerland and has been at the school for a few weeks already but was in a lower level and is now moving up. More subjunctive in both classes. Then in the afternoon we talked about superstitions and spanish people are weird because they think it's good luck if you accidentally step in dog poop or if a bird poops on your head. That's just gross. If I was walking around town and a bird pooped on my head I seriously would not be thinking "wow it's my lucky day." But anyway.
After class I got my package from home and was so excited to get more fuzzy socks. And chocolate of course. Then we hung around the school a bit and used the internet. Then we returned to our houses. Today was laundry day and cleaning day so today I got new sheets on my bed and one of my towels got washed which was nice because I was beginning to wonder if that was ever going to happen. I also already got some of my clothes back which was a nice surprise. And I've just been hanging out in my room ever since. Trying not to think about a little bit of homework that I should do. Trying not to think about all the logistics that go into planning trips for the weekends.
But I guess I probably should do something. So I should finish this up. Maybe I'll be more interesting tomorrow.

beautiful sunday
Today was a beautiful day. The temperature was perfectly comfortable in my skirt and leggings with my fleece as a jacket. And it was nice and sunny. There was actually enough light coming in the window this early afternoon that I could get ready to go out without my light on. That was pretty exciting. If only I could sleep until noon everyday. 7:40 is going to come way too early tomorrow. That I know for sure.
But seriously. Sleeping in is wonderful. I got up at like 12:30 I think. Took a nice warm shower and actually had time to do something more interesting with my hair than just a bun which was nice for a change. Met up with Emily and we decided to visit the flamenco museum. It was pretty interesting. But the show was at the same time we had planned on going to mass so we had to pass on that. We'll have to go and see a show at some point though. Then we found a place for me to get something to eat. Nothing really exciting, a ham and cheese sandwich, but it was good and came with a drink and chips and was still less than 3 euro so I was all for that.
After that we sat in the plaza nueva for awhile and look at all the cute and well dressed spanish kids riding bikes and roller blading and kicking soccer balls. This one girl and her brother were racing each other around going so fast on their roller blades and every time she passed us she would say things like ¿qué pasa? and we had no idea what she was wanting us to say. I decided that if I have little girls some day I'm going to dress them like little spanish girls with cute little dresses and fancy coats and color coordinating shoes, tights, and hair bows. Seriously. The kids here are so cute. And the babies? They all wear these precious little knit bonnets and sweaters. It's adorable. But anyway.
Next we went to mass. At the church of the magdalena again. We just went there because we knew they had a mass later than 1:30. It's hard to know what all the mass times of the different churches are. Got back to the house with just a little bit of time before dinner. It was this rice that was good except I ate around the seafood looking parts. Then there was this hamburger like thing that R said wasn't actually hamburger and she kind of described what it was but I didn't totally get it and didn't really want to. And our dessert was a pear which was kind of disappointing after all the chocolate last night. But I guess I can't expect oreos every night. Sadly. Luckily I have some chocolate and twizzlers in my room.
That's basically it for this beautiful and relaxing sunday. Not a bad weekend if I do say so myself.

Córdoba
Today was a really great day. Definitely worth not sleeping in to get to visit lovely Córdoba.
I honestly don't know how long we were on the bus, but I'm pretty sure it was at least an hour. Once we got off our first stop was a little walk through the narrow streets of the old jewish neighborhood. Where the streets are all really narrow like this:
They are made really narrow like this because it gets really hot in the summer and when the streets are narrower the sun can't get down in the narrow spaces as much so the houses and the street stays a little cooler.
Then we went to the synagogue. It is one of only three synagogues left in all of Spain.
After that we went to el zoco which used to be a jewish market. Now there are a few little shops that sell silver jewelry and some hand painted tiles and some leather products.
Our next stop was the alcazar de los reyes cristianos I believe it was called. It is a palace that was originally built and used by arab rulers I believe but then it was taken over by the christian kings. I think that's how it went. The highlight was definitely the beautiful gardens.
After this we got a break for lunch. And it happened to be the weekend of the medieval market. Which was so much fun. I got a simple and cheap lunch of this local type of bread and cheese and sprung for a pepsi because it just sounded so good. Then we walked around and looked at all the different items, pretty much all hand made, that there were for sale. I actually spent some money and got some little souvenirs for a few people. And I got a couple of tasty chocolate bars for myself.
When our lunch break was over we headed over to the mezquita-catedral. Which is a cathedral in the middle of an old mosque. It's a totally unique place, I'm pretty sure you can't find any other cathedral that was built right in the middle of a mosque. It's actually really cool with all of the old islamic architecture and then right in the middle the beautiful altar and stained glass windows. There's also a lot of pretty side chapels all along the outside and I wish we would have had more time to look at everything.
I think it was a little after 5 when we left and we got back with maybe a little over an hour left before dinner. So maybe it actually took us more like 2 hours to get there? 1 and a half? Anyway. Dinner was really good. I'm not exactly sure what the meat was but it tasted alright. And the potato cake thing was good as always. The soup was kind of weird, just like a broth with a lot of big noodles on top, but it was also good. The best part though was probably getting our favorite chocolate truffles from the northern part of spain and oreos for dessert.
Now I am ready to just relax and get ready for a nice long sleep. I'll be very grateful when I don't have to get up at 7:30 tomorrow morning.

not much to report
I was about ready to go to bed when I remembered I should probably say something about my day.
It started off well because R set out oranges to have with breakfast.
Then we had our test in the grammar class. It wasn't too bad and went pretty well. I actually did well on the past tense part. But not too surprising since I'm a lot better at it in writing than I am when I'm trying to use them in conversation.
Second class I hardly remember honestly. We talked a little about spanish customs and norms and compared them to the countries we're from so that was kind of interesting.
Last class was kind of weird. We stopped practicing past tense and worked a little with imperative to tell people to do different gestures. So we had to go over some parts of the body vocab. We also spent some talking about whether we we did things with our left or right hand and foot and what not and discussed the advantages and the inconveniences of being left handed. It was really random and odd.
After class we spent some time using the internet at school. Tried to talk a little about where we want to go for some weekend trips. Didn't make a lot of progress.
We're going to córdoba tomorrow so we walked to the place we are supposed to meet the group from the school to make sure we would be able to find it tomorrow morning.
Then we went to 100 montaditos for the little sandwiches. I tried one today that was chicken and like a cesar type of dressing which was really pretty good.
Dinner was good too. Some rice and bean soup thing and then this pasta with a little meat to go with it. And an orange for dessert.
I promise the post for tomorrow will be more exciting. Hopefully I will have the time and energy for putting up some pictures because I am sure there will be plenty of opportunities for taking photos tomorrow.
And now off to bed before and early morning.

some more pictures for you
Same old same old morning routine. Got to class just barely in time. I keep telling myself that I need to leave a little earlier. But that would mean going down to breakfast earlier which would meaning being ready to go earlier which might mean getting up earlier which I'm just not willing to do.
Grammar class I hardly even remember. We did more with the subjunctive I think. We have a test tomorrow. Hopefully it goes ok. I'm not really stressing about it though. I don't feel like I need to do too much studying (not any really). Second class went pretty well. We talked about our houses and our teacher said she wants an american kitchen with a refrigerator with double doors. Whenever she sees an american movie she gets really jealous of the big kitchens. And the houses definitely are a lot smaller here. And most people don't even live in houses. They live in apartments or flats. So it's very different from our big american homes (which I miss a lot). Then we each took on a personality and role played that we were sharing a house and had to come up with a list of rules and household chores and such. It was kind of fun. I don't know what the point was though. Then in the afternoon class we talked more about vacations but this time we talked about the last vacation we went on. So I talked about going to harry potter world this summer. Which was kind of hard to describe in spanish. And it made me really miss florida and Katherine and Mallory and Katy and my harry potter books. We also talked a little bit about the first time we remember doing certain things. Like riding a bike or going to a museum of traveling by airplane. It's all good practice I suppose. It's just frustrating making some of the same mistakes over and over again. Especially when it's things you know on paper. And there are times when there are things that I want to say that I just kind of say the same way you would in english which doesn't really work. It's hard when you have things to say but don't know the right words to say to get your point across.
This afternoon we went with the school to tour el palacio de lebrija. It's this palace that was built in the 16th century I believe back when this city was really rich and thriving. It's known for the owner's love of archeology which led to her bringing in a lot of mosaics from these nearby roman ruins as well as a lot of tiles from arabian architects and artists. We didn't spend a lot of time there, you can see it pretty quickly, but it was pretty with a lot of cool architectural aspects.
After that we found this restaurant that we had heard people talking about and they have a ton of montaditos which are like little sandwiches and they are all pretty cheap. So we tried these chocolate ones which were really good and satisfied a chocolate craving. It was seriously warm melted chocolate between two slices of bread. And it came with potato chips. All for 1 euro. Not too bad. Not super filling but we were just trying it out today. Next time I might get a couple of things.
After that I came back to the house. Lola (the cat) was super super obnoxious and just making all kinds of noise. I'm assuming it's because R and J were gone all day at an art exhibition in Malaga. They showed me the brochure/program at dinner, meat and potatoes and rice, and I tried to show interest in enthusiasm but the sculptures all looked really weird to me. But if they like it...
So glad tomorrow is friday and I'm excited to go to cordoba on saturday. I'll make sure to bring spare batteries for that trip.

another day down
Well. I made it to past the half way point of the week. And that's really the most exciting thing about today.
I moved really really slowly this morning because I just did not feel rested at all when I got up. So I barely made it to breakfast and walked into the school right at the bell was ringing. And then I was exhausted all day. So I wasn't very focused on or interested in anything we did. Grammar and Communication classes were both more practice with the subjunctive but instead of wishes and desires we used it with emotions and sentiments and such today. Then in the afternoon class we talked about vacations and trips and vocabulary you might use when talking about that.
After class we went into one of the phone shops to see what kind of plans were available. I didn't wind up getting one yet though. It's just hard because the different countries all use different things that there are words for but I don't know them. So the phone we would get here would only work here in spain. And I don't really want to use it much so I wasn't sure if it was entirely worth it. But I probably will just in case and for those quick weekend trips within spain when I won't be able to get in touch with people over the internet. Then I don't know what I will do for any traveling I might do after spain. I guess we will just have to see when the time comes.
We had pizza for dinner which was good. We also had this spanish thing that has a name I don't remember and those were good too. The meat was a little weird. The sauce was good and everything it's just that the chicken itself was really tough and chewy and required a lot of effort to eat which I don't really like. J had us try some wine from his hometown but he gave me more than I was really wanting to drink and it's weird having to explain to people that I am not accustomed to drinking and therefore do not want to drink a lot all at once. Especially when this is clearly not the case with the other girls.
Since none of that was very interesting I guess you deserve some pictures. You seen plaza de espana before but last time it was at night so it will be a different point of view I guess.

here's the deal...
...today I'm not really feeling like posting that much. But I still don't want to break the habit of posting everyday. So today's post is going to be a little shorter and maybe a little less detailed than you might like but you can blame my teacher for giving me homework or R and J for having dinner later than usual or me for wanting to go to bed at a decent hour.
Same old morning routine. Grammar class we practiced subjunctive. Got a lot of homework. Communication we practiced subjunctive. With a shakira song. We're supposed to write a poem that kind of follows the same theme/structure of said shakira song. It's weird. Had lunch, same old boring not too filling peanut butter sandwich. Signed up to go to Córdoba on saturday. Signed up to go to Granada next weekend. That should be fun. Afternoon class we talked about education in Spain and in Brazil and the US. I actually did a lot of talking because I like talking about what makes the best teacher and whether or not punishment should be used in the classroom and the arguments for and against wearing uniforms. I think that kind of thing is actually kind of fun. So the afternoon actually passed pretty quickly for once.
After school we walked to plaza de españa to see it in the daylight. There are more pictures obviously but you'll have to wait because I don't feel like waiting to upload them here tonight. Maybe tomorrow. Then we went to the museum of I don't know what it was I think it was called costumes and customs or something like that. It was interesting enough I suppose but I was definitely glad that the student price was free. After that I came back to the house. Did some homework. Had dinner. It was some kind of meat and potatoes I think which was good but there was also a few pieces of this cooked pineapple I think it was which I wasn't really a fan of. And then this ice cream that was kind of weird and it was in a bowl on top of some warm rice which was really weird because it all sort of melted together. It's wasn't bad necessarily just really weird. They said to put cinnamon on top but I don't do cinnamon. So of course they talked about how particular K and I are and how not particular H is about food.
Then we got our laundry back. It was kind of awkward because she put all three of our clothes together when she folded it so we had to go through and pick out what was ours. One of the other girls took one of my camis so I had to go up and ask her for that. Everything looks fine but certain things were still a little damp so I still have stuff hanging from odd places in my room. And that's basically it for today. I gave you more than I thought and it should be more than satisfactory for the day. I'll try to do better tomorrow. And just remember there will definitely be pictures of my palace tour on thursday and the trip to córdoba on saturday.
Then we went to the museum of I don't know what it was I think it was called costumes and customs or something like that. monday
I think that title basically sums it up. Just another day. Nothing too exciting. Fortunately I did feel a little bit better today. I still don't know if I am 100% and I'm kind of afraid of eating too much or eating anything too weird in case my stomach just can't handle it.
Woke up without too much trouble today. It actually felt warm in the room which was different. Same old cold in the bathroom though. Apparently monday is cleaning day so I had to get the clothes I wanted washed together and set them by my door for R to pick up. Hopefully it won't take too long to get them back but just in case I didn't put the essentials like my sweatshirt, sweatpants, and fuzzy socks in there. I don't think I could go even one night without them.
This morning in the grammar class we started working on the subjunctive but just the boring basics. I know how to conjugate the verbs in the subjunctive tense, I need be reminded when to use it. In the communication class we played a board game where each space had a sentence where you had to use por or para correctly or else you had to go back to the beginning. And then we learned some spanish sayings and tried to practice using them in conversation. In the afternoon class there was a new girl from brazil and we spent our class time practicing using the different past tenses to talk about our childhood, specifically our experiences in elementary school. It's still pretty difficult to remember all the grammar rule while you're talking...but I guess that's how you learn. Just practice practice practice. But it's kind of awkward because you know the teacher is sitting there listening to you and writing down your mistakes. So you just have to keep in mind that she's doing that to bring it to your attention and help you correct it and make sure you know what's wrong and what's right.
After class we sat in the patio for awhile and used the internet there. Then we went to the store again to get a few more things. I needed some kleenex and some napkins and wanted to get some sprite and some crackers for in case my stomach acts up again. And after that we had a lot to carry with us so we decided to part ways. I spent the rest of the afternoon perusing the internet and listening to R and J have a very loud conversation somewhere downstairs. Then it was dinner time and it's so much more lively with the other girls here. I mean I have to take some jokes about still needing to learn more grammar and vocabulary but I'll take it. It's kind of frustrating because I feel like most of the time these girls aren't using vocabulary that is much more advanced than mine and it's not like they use all of their verbs and tenses correctly...they can just say it all faster and with more confidence than I can so it doesn't matter that it's not exactly right because they can be understood and they don't make the person listening to them wait forever for an answer. But anyway.
Dinner was actually pretty good. We had a small bowl of soup and I think I heard the word vegetable associated with it but there wasn't like whole vegetables in there and it was a much smaller bowl since we also had pasta so that was nice. I would have probably finished the soup if there hadn't been a huge plate of some kind of pasta to eat as well. I don't really know how to describe it but it seemed normal and tasted good. There was also so kind of meat, two kinds of meat, or maybe it was just prepared two different ways, but after the pasta and soup I was so full that I couldn't even think of eating any of it. I couldn't even finish my orange because I was so full. And I'm still not very good at peeling it and cutting it apart with my knife. Oh and J made us try this tuna that had even the brave H making faces. He cut up bits of it and we all, even K, tried a tiny tiny bite, with bread at the suggestion of R, and it wasn't terrible. But I just can't get past the fishiness and the chewiness of it. Needless to say one to tiny bite was more than enough tuna for us.
Well one more monday down. And now some of those pictures from the cathedral that I promised you. But I did say that my camera died before I got to the giralda right? Next time I know to bring spare batteries and I promise I will go back and get pictures from the top of the tower before I leave seville. But there are still some pretty good ones from inside the cathedral so I hope for now you'll be satisfied with those.
**when I posted this a few minutes ago I forgot to mention how I shocked the girls from Brazil and Holland in our class today when we were sharing some cultural information and I said that most people in the united states start having kids before they are thirty... Like seriously, based on their responses, I thought I had misunderstood the question. You would have thought I said it was normal to have twenty kids instead of saying it's normal to have your first kid when you're twenty something. It was kind of funny actually.

not the greatest weekend
I wish I had been able to do more on this first weekend in Spain, but I just didn't really feel up to it. It was nice to sleep in again today but I still feel like I could have slept a lot longer. But I had to get up so I could meet Emily and go to mass. We went to the church of the magdalena I think it was called. And of course like all of the other churches here it was very ornately decorated and it was really cold inside. After mass we went to a pizza place and I was able to eat one small piece of pizza. After that we went to this nearby plaza and just sat in the sun and watched people go by with their dogs and their strollers and their little girls in matching outfits. I feel like all of the little kids here are dressed really well.
That was really basically all we did. I have been back at the house for awhile trying to just rest some more because my stomach is still pretty upset. I don't know if it's a touch of the flu or if all the different food is just not agreeing with me, but whatever the case may be I was really not in the best shape this weekend. I haven't had much of an appetite either, especially for the big meals they eat here for dinner. I would be satisfied with the soup or the meat dish by itself, but no. They have both. Plus bread, maybe a salad and then some fruit for desert. I just don't think my stomach is handling it very well. And right now I am just hoping that this will not be the way things are during the whole trip.
Well, we'll have dinner shortly. And I'm glad that the other girls are back for that. Then I will probably be off to bed shortly after so I can hopefully feel up to the full week of classes ahead of me.

My first saturday in Spain
Today was the first saturday I spent in spain. Unfortunately I spent most of it not feeling very well. Emily and I had made plans to meet up at 1:30 and really that is the only reason I got out of bed today. It was really nice to finally get to sleep in. I didn't get out of bed until after noon. And the funny thing that happened this morning was that the room was actually a comfortable temperature. I woke up the first time at 9 and got to remove a blanket and pair of socks and was still perfectly comfortable. It was fantastic.
It was really nice out today. It was still cool enough that I needed to wear my jacket but it was really sunny and just overall a great day. There are a ton of people out in the street on saturdays in sevilla apparently. The streets were packed. And almost everyone had either a dog or a baby with them. There are seriously so many people either walking their dogs or pushing strollers. There are also a lot of street performers. There was a guy that was being a head on this table and when people walked by he would make some sort of noise to scare them. There was a guy that wore this costume so that he looked like this couple dancing. And there was this person dressed as a baby, stroller and all, and making all sorts of crazy annoying sounds.
We decided to visit the cathedral today and it was beautiful. It's so big and all the side chapels are so ornately decorated. One of the big things there is that it is where the tomb of Christopher Columbus is. The cathedral is one of the best known landmarks in the city because of the big tower called la giralda. We also climbed to the top of that and took in the amazing view of the city. Unfortunately though my camera died part way through the trip so I am going to have to go back so that I can get some pictures from the top of the tower.
After that we found and ice cream place because I thought maybe some ice cream wouldn't upset my stomach too bad. All throughout the day my stomach was upset and I just overall wasn't feeling very well. So after ice cream I went back to my house instead of going with Emily to see her host in her singing group. And I have basically been laying in bed ever since.
I was dreading dinner because I still really didn't have much of an appetite. But I think R could tell I wasn't feeling that great when I came downstairs. She started asking me what was wrong and I tried to explain it the best I could. So she told me to just eat what I wanted. So I didn't touch much of the meat. I had a bite of it but it was really chewy and the sauce was kind of weird so I knew I was not going to be able to have any more of that. But there was also some chicken and potato soup that I was able to eat a good amount of and I had a banana for desert. She also gave me some apple juice to take to my room with me which was nice.
So I've just been kind of lounging around and sipping my apple juice hoping I will feel better tomorrow. I'm going to get up and go to mass at 1 or 1:30 I think but honestly, depending on how I feel, I might just come home after that and try to get some more rest before I have to go through another full week of school.
oh and I will put some pictures up eventually, I just simply do not have the energy for that tonight.

It's Friday
Well. I made it. To the end of the week that is. Just 11 more to go.
I got up and went about what I guess is becoming my normal routine. Which is kind of depressing because I really hate not being able to do my hair and take the time to care about what I'm wearing. But it is what it is. The other girls were leaving more Madrid this morning so I actually ate breakfast with people for a change. Breakfast was the same as always. Toast and milk of questionable origin.
Grammar class was a review of por and para. I felt like I understood it pretty well...then I had to do the homework assignment and still had questions on a couple. I guess it's just one of those things that I might never get right 100% of the time. Then in communication class we actually had a lot of fun with this activity. I'm not sure exactly what the point of it was - practice using preterite and imperfect in writing maybe - but it was entertaining so I don't really care. We had to right a news article, just a brief little announcement really, and it was about a murder. So we came up with a list of the facts you needed to know to write the article, the who, what, where, when, and why. But to do that we wrote down for example who the killer was and then folded over what we wrote and passed the paper to the person on our left. And then we wrote who died and folded over what we wrote and passed it to the left. And so on down the list of facts. Then we got in groups of three and looked at the three different news stories we had to work with. Ours was really amusing because a girl in the class killing shakira with the cap from a bottle of beer in the cathedral because she was hungry.
Then it was break and I ate my peanut butter sandwich and was still hungry. I talked with one of the guys from BC and one of the girls from Ohio that's in my classes. I like the Ohio people so it will be sad not having them around anymore. But we did at least add each other on facebook so we're hoping we can still get together sometimes throughout the semester. We did our presentations in our afternoon class and I think it went pretty well. I made a couple grammatical mistakes that she pointed out and corrected afterwards, but they're things that I know in writing it's just hard to remember when speaking. I think I also got marked down a bit in my fluidity I guess you would call it but that's something I would definitely expect. After we did our presentations we talked about the stages of life in spanish and how people are classified based on age and what age group we thought was the best and what not. Then we talked about childhood and our elementary school days and learned some vocab that went along with talking about that.
Emily wanted to stay and use the internet at the school after class so we sat in the patio area for awhile. Then we tried to get some answers to some questions we had. We were able to figure out what excursions we get for free which is two of the one day trips. Or she said we could get one two day trip like the trip to Granada. Which I really want to go on. I kind of want to go to Córdoba next weekend too. So we'll have to see. We have a lot of planning to do. We also tried to get some questions about getting a cell phone here and making calls to the u.s. answered but the two different people we talked to told us very different things. So there's still a little confusion there. Right now skype works fine for me and I don't really need a phone but it would be nice to have to communicate with people here in the city and also to take on trips where I'm probably not going to bring my computer.
So after all of that. We went to Emily's house to put her computer back and switch bags. We met her host as we were leaving and she had her baby granddaughter who was extremely adorable with her. Then we decided to walk over to the basilica of the macarena which is not a church dedicated to the song or dance macarena. I don't know what it means or what is the significance of this title for mary and I'm too lazy and tired to look it up right now. My house was on the way so I dropped off my stuff and looked up directions to the church and R brought in a new heater that actually works which is exciting. I mean really all it does it keep me from shivering when I'm wearing my extra pair of socks and sweatshirt.
We found the church fine but I can't say I really liked being in that part of the city. It seemed a little sketchier than where I am at and where the school is and such. But it was really pretty and I'm glad I got to see it. One of the processions for semana santa starts there and it was crazy seeing the hugh figures of Jesus and Mary inside that get carried around for the procession. Then we walked back and parted ways. I spent some time in my room. Then I was called down for dinner. I basically just ate by myself. There was some kind of meat and this pizza that I think had some kind of ham on it. But I finally was forced to have yogurt for dessert. I don't like yogurt. But that was the part of the meal that R decided to come in and talk to me about my life so I had to sit there and eat a good amount of it. Disgusting.
And now it is really time for me to be going to bed. I'm looking forward to sleeping in and hopefully seeing some monuments or museums or something tomorrow.

one of those days
Today was just one of those days. I was feeling kind of down all day. No particular reason.
I got up when I wanted to, but it's still really painful getting out of bed when the house is so cold. My room is cold. The hallway is cold. The bathroom is cold. My towels don't dry in my cold room. I'm so thankful there is hot water in the shower. I don't know what I would do if there wasn't. Except it's painful getting out of the warm shower. I would be in there a very long time if I wasn't trying so hard to not waste water. It's also hard putting on clothes that have been in my cold closet for days. They hardly help to warm me up. But I'm managing I guess. I just know I will be very happy to be back home with my own bathroom and a full length mirror in my room. And heat. Except it will be warm by then. Hopefully. But I don't want to be here without air conditioning either. I'm sure that's not any more pleasant than the cold. I just wish that I had the time and the energy and the resources to check my appearance before leaving the house. I didn't realize that was a luxury.
Moving on from that rather dreary note... I got to school basically right on time. I should maybe start leaving a few minutes earlier but today R kept making me eat things. I had part of this I don't even know what that maybe had some kind of fruit in it and was rather slimy. So in the grammar class we talked about trips some more. Learned some more vocab. Not that I actually remember any of it. Then we practiced telling anecdotes using common spanish phrases and responding to other people's anecdotes with common spanish phrases. We also did a little more with preterite and imperfect but I think it's our last day with that. Next week we're moving on to subjunctive and tomorrow we're reviewing por and para.
In the second class we talked about spain and how it's divided and we were assigned different autonomous communities to read about and present to the class. I did andalucía which is where sevilla is so it was pretty basic. Then I had one of the tiny granola bars I bought during break. It was pretty good, not terribly filling though, but still better than paying to eat out everyday. This afternoon we finished our powerpoint about país vasco and tomorrow we will give a presentation on the information we found.
After classes finished Emily and I walked around to try and find some stores that sold cheap notebooks because I needed one for class. We walked around some parts of the city we hadn't seen before and found a little shop that sold random things basically. They were snack type foods and some random toys and cleaning products. Also some souvenirs and scarves and fans. After we got our stuff we realized they had some fuzzy socks out front and I was really tempted to get some because I only brought one pair and wear them all the time and will simply not no what to do without them while they are being washed which will eventually have to happen I suppose. On the subject of laundry, I really don't know how that is going to work. I think R washed some things for the other girls today but she hasn't discussed laundry with me yet. I'm supposed to get one load each week though...
After that we walked around some more and were still hungry even having eaten the granola bars during break. So we tried to find a little cafe that had something that sounded appetizing and also didn't cost very much. We walked all over before eventually settling on a cafe back by the school where we had some tiny sandwiches that were also not very filling. But really it's just a long time between lunch and dinner so I think it's going to take my appetite a little while to adjust. I'm thinking of bringing a peanut butter sandwich with me tomorrow. Hopefully that will help pass the time until dinner.
I don't know what I'm going to do this weekend for meal times because the other girls are going to Madrid for the weekend and they're leaving early tomorrow morning. I count on them to carry conversation at dinner and R and J don't usually eat with us so I feel like I might be eating by myself. But they still stand in the kitchen while we eat, so I'm afraid I might have to try and eat with them watching me and only me and try to carry on a conversation with them at the same time. They already call me a slow eater I can't imagine what they'll think after this weekend.
Dinner tonight was actually really good. It was quiet because H was gone, I don't know where, and J was doing something else I think. But we had this really yummy pasta that I like a lot. I wasn't crazy about the egg that we had with it and I feel bad but if we leave anything on our plate R is always asking if we don't like it and I can't really lie to people. And it's not that it was bad, eggs just aren't my favorite. Today I had to mix it up a little for desert and had an apple instead of an orange. But it was still fruit that I like so it was fine with me.
And now I'm really tired so my goal is to be in bed before 12:30. Which gives me about 50 minutes. I think I can do it.

a do nothing day
And by do nothing I mean I didn't do anything exciting after class. But there is still plenty to talk about.
This morning I got up earlier, ate breakfast later and still felt like I didn't have enough time to do all I had hoped to do. I'm hoping I will get my schedule down and a routine figured out soon. But I still got to the school on time. It was a little warmer and sunnier today which was nice. This morning in the grammar class we didn't focus as much on grammar I feel like. We talk a little bit about the past perfect tense and when you would use that and not one of the other past tenses. So it was pretty simple and I didn't really have any trouble with it. We also talk a lot about traveling and vacations and there was a good amount of vocabulary that I wasn't familiar with. We were assigned several activities in the book and they weren't too bad except for one where you had a list of travel related words that you had to match with other travel related words and I just didn't see the point of it at all.
The second half of the morning was pretty fun. We talked about stories, in particular stories we remembered reading as kids. Then we talked about some vocabulary that is often used in kids' stories and how to use the preterite and imperfect in telling stories. This kind of confused again what I thought I understood to be the "rules" that we learned yesterday. But I must not have been too confused because then we had to write a story using some of the vocab we learned and using the preterite correctly and when she corrected the stories afterwards I only had a few mistakes and I was able to understand pretty easily what was wrong and why the other way was right.
At our afternoon break I tried some of the sandwich that Emily's host mom sent with her. That was interesting. It was pretty good...I've just never eaten, or ever thought of eating/making, a potato sandwich before. Then in the afternoon class we worked on finding information on the spanish community of our choosing so we could use what we find to make some kind of presentation. My group is doing the presentation on país vasco and I got the job of looking up basically the boring and basic information but that was fine with me. I got to learn about the climate and economy and some of the outdoor activities you can do there. We spent pretty much the whole time doing that so we will spend tomorrow putting together a powerpoint with the information we find.
During this class though I got a note that I need to go talk to someone about the internship that I'm supposed to do while I'm here. So I found her and she said that when she looked over the resume I sent her and saw that I had worked at day camps and such with kids that she looked into me doing my internship at some kind of daycare. But she explained how I would need to make sure that my spanish was good enough to communicate with the others that work there - to be able to understand any instructions they give me and to be able to tell them about any problems and stuff like that. The kids there are infants up to 3 years old so they don't know any english clearly and I guess I would need to be able to communicate with them as well. But as far as communicating with babies and toddlers I would just need to know words like stop and no and pick up your toys. Maybe some don't do thats like no hitting, kicking, spitting, etc. I don't. It sounds like something I would really like, but I'm not entirely confident my spanish is where it needs to be and I don't know if it will improve enough in just a few weeks for me to feel comfortable doing this. But I guess I'll probably feel that way about any of the internship positions I'm presented with. So I've got some things to think about.
After class Emily and I went back to corte inglés to get some food so that we wouldn't have to be spending our money on eating out every day. I got a loaf of bread and some peanut butter and also some chocolate wafer cracker cookie things to snack on. But I forgot to look for a notebook somewhere so I guess that's the next thing I will try to find. After that we just had a lazy afternoon. Emily came over after a while so we could finish our story project. I had dinner between 8:30 and 9 I think. Soup again. With meat and potatoes and carrots and some kind of bean I think. Then there was this chicken with this weird sauce and these potatoes that I really don't like very much and this other kind of vegetable that was like fried or something I think. I'm not really sure. Then there was an orange for dessert of course. At least I'm getting some fruit. Even if I'm eating when I feel like I should be offered chocolate...
So, pretty simple, nothing to exciting, and I'll probably be going to bed soon because once again I am super tired. And hopefully I will do even better at getting up tomorrow morning. Hasta luego.

day 2 and some pictures
Today was my second day of class. And I knew how to get to the school without any trouble so I was able to sleep a little longer today. However the same phenomenon occurred today that happened yesterday. This time I set my alarm for 7:30 and turned it off and said "five more minutes." Which quickly became 35 more minutes, so, again, I didn't get up when I planned and was rather rushed. But I still got in a fairly quick and wonderfully warm shower. However, once again, I didn't have time to do much with my hair or put much thought into what I was going to wear. And I was late to breakfast. We said 8:30 but I didn't get downstairs until 8:40. I really don't like the whole breakfast thing because I just don't like to eat much for breakfast. Even when I'm not rushing all I'm really going to want to eat is a piece of bread or toast with some butter or jam and then I'll be satisfied. But anyway...
I got to school and had grammar class. There was another student in our morning classes today, a guy this time, the only one, and he is from Japan. I got to know a lot about his life during the second part of the morning because we were partners int he communication class. But first in the grammar class we reviewed conjugations of preterite and imperfect and some of the irregular verbs as well as when to use which. I've learned this before but I still get it wrong sometimes. And I'm sure I'll still get it wrong sometimes even now. But the explanation was helpful and the "rules" were kind of what I already knew but stated in a way that covered a broader spectrum of situations which was nice. In communication class we basically just talked with our partner the whole time. Some of the conversation was structured and then when we got done with the questions we were supposed to ask and go over we just got to talk with each which I suppose is really the best way to learn. You've just got to practice. More and more and more.
In the afternoon class we talked some more about spain and the regions or communities that make up the country. We also learned a little more about what each of these regions is known for. And tomorrow we are going to be in the media center and we are going to make some kind of pamphlet or flyer about one of the regions.
When we got out of class Emily and I walked around trying to find some kind of grocery store or supermarket or somewhere we could get some simple foods or snacks to bring for our lunch so we would not be eating out everyday. Along the way we found an atm and I was finally able to get some money now that my card is working. We also unintentionally walked to the place where we were supposed to meet for the tour we were going on later. By then we were super hungry and basically just stopped at the first little cafe we came across. It wasn't a tapas place, but we did get a good sandwich and some chips. Then we started walking back toward our houses, still looking for a store. We stopped in some shops along to way to look at the rebajas, which are like these big sales or reductions in price. Most things are still more than I would like to pay though. And I really don't want to spend too much on clothes because I don't have that much money or that much room in my suitcase.
We eventually made it back to Corte Inglés and decided to go in and see what kind of practical items they had in the pharmacy section and found that we had a place to go if we ever needed things like toothpaste or lotion or soap or things like that. *side note. the cat is being super obnoxious right now. she meows sooo loud* And then we noticed another staircase we had not seen the day before. We had been to all of the upper levels the day before, but we didn't realize there was a lower lever. Finally we found our grocery store. We were able to find some snack foods and bread which you can get for fairly cheap, it's the peanut butter that was the most expensive *oh my goodness this cat is driving me crazy* We were also able to find some bottled water that was a lot cheaper than any of the bottles from the little cafes and such that you see everywhere. But at this point is was getting close to time to meet for our tour so we didn't actually buy anything because we didn't have time to take it back to our houses.
So we headed back over to the area we had been in earlier. The designated meeting place was puerta de jerez. Where there is this pretty fountain. We were a little early so I decided I had better break out the camera finally.
It was a little warmer today which made walking around and standing and listening to some spanish explanations of important things in the city more bearable. But what we saw today was also farther away from we we live. So we were very tired by the time it was done. I don't know if I'm ever going to accomplish the whole going out thing because I am tired at the end of the day and basically ready to go to bed by 10. But of course I stay up til about 12 or 1 anyway...
So we learned a little about puerta de jerez and then we saw part of the university of seville. Then we walked over to what I believe is called parque de maría luís or something like that. The biggest thing on this whole journey was seeing plaza de españa which is really big and really pretty and I don't remember the historical significance of it at all. But one of the star wars movies was filmed there. I do remember that.
After that we walked some more through this park, saw some cool looking museums, and finally started making our way back. We made it back to our houses without any problems. Actually I even had time left before dinner so I stopped back at the store to pick up a bottle of water and some granola bars so I could have a little snack at school if I should happen to want one. Dinner was ready basically right as I walked in the door. R asked me about my day and I responded in my slow and choppy spanish that always makes me look like a beginning student of the language compared to the other girls in the house. She had me call up to the other girls while I put my stuff in my room and then it was dinner time.
It's kind of weird, the whole dinner situation. The two other girls and I eat by ourselves but R and J stand in the kitchen and talk to us, mostly H and K, the ones who can actually carry on a conversation. R also takes our plates as we finish. We had this chicken and potato soup which was pretty good despite being an odd yellow-greenish color. But I'm not a soup person typically so maybe that is not actually an odd color for soup. I wouldn't know. There was also so small pieces of meat of some sort and bread of course. The salad had corn and what I think we pieces of crab maybe in it. J also had us try some of this sausage type stuff which wasn't too bad. I eat a lot slower than the other girls though which they laugh about. R and J that is. But there is so much food and I don't want to be rude and not finish what I'm given and it just happened to take me forever to eat this big bowl of soup. And after all of that food she still asks us what we want for desert. I feel like she's going to wonder why I have an orange every night but when it's that or a banana or yogurt it seems like the obvious choice. But it takes longer to eat an orange than it does to eat a cup of yogurt so I look even more like the slow one. Oh well. I guess I've only been here a couple of days. A lot can happen in 12 weeks.
So that was day 2. Nothing too exciting to report but for now that's fine with me.
